If you are like most people, you probably love Amazon and usually receive at least one Amazon box a week at your house. There are just so many amazing things available and they get delivered so quickly. It’s easy to be obsessed. We are really excited to partner with Amazon again for this year’s “Boxtumes” campaign. Last year, Melodee made Dax a race car. What’s a Boxtume? It’s a DIY costume made out of Amazon smile boxes and crafting supplies found in your home or available
on Amazon. We had a great time making this easy DIY Halloween costume. It was only appropriate that we would create a spaceship.
We are thrilled to share our simple, step-by-step process with you for this classic costume! First, let’s gather the materials you’ll need to make this DIY cardboard spaceship for your kids — or yourself!
Supplies for a DIY Cardboard Spaceship
- 2-3 Amazon smile boxes sized to your child and how large you want the costume
- silver duct tape (for construction)
- black duct tape (optional – for trimming)
- silver foil tape
- roll of red-party streamers
- roll of orange party streamers
- roll of yellow party streamers
- utility knife
How to Make a DIY Cardboard Spaceship
For our spaceship, Mike placed two boxes together, end to end. You may need more boxes depending on the size of your child. Once the boxes are end to end, tape them together. Mike taped the bottom flaps together but the top flaps are what were used to create the point of the spaceship. The top flap was cut into a triangle. For our boxes, we had to extend the cut about three inches past the flap so that everything could meet and line up properly.
Once everything was taped together using the regular duct tape, we covered the entire spaceship in the silver tape.
We then cut the circles for Sam’s face and arms. We hunted our house for circular items to trace so we would have even circles. We landed on a garbage can for the face and large rolls of tape for the arms. We used the black tape to add trim where desired. We added bungee cord suspenders inside the box to make it easy for Sam to walk and carry his treat bag.
Finally, we cut the streamers to make fire. Red is the shortest, then orange, and finally yellow. We found it easier to do one side at a time completely, starting with the front. We taped the streamers on the inside of the box. Once complete, Sam was ready for lift-off. We think this Amazon Boxtume turned out so cute!
We hope you’ll gather your Amazon smile boxes and get creating your own DIY Halloween costume idea as well. You can share it on social media using the hashtag #Boxtumes so we can all see your creativity in action!
